Sound Start Music is a friendly, peripatetic music service dedicated to helping young people discover confidence, creativity, and joy through music. Led by multi-instrumentalist Leo Thornely, lessons are designed to be engaging, supportive, and tailored to each individual student.
Leo grew up surrounded by music, first learning trumpet and piano before discovering the guitar as a teenager. Inspired by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Guns N’ Roses, he began playing in bands and soon expanded his skills to include drums and a wide range of musical styles. Over time, his playing has developed to embrace classical and folk influences alongside his rock roots, giving his teaching a broad and well-rounded perspective.
With over 15 years of teaching experience, Leo is a highly skilled educator and musician. He holds a CTLLS (City & Guilds Level 4) qualification and a Rockschool Level 3 Music Educator certification, specialising in teaching music. Alongside his teaching, he brings industry experience in performance, sound, and festival work, enriching lessons with real-world insight.
At Sound Start Music, learning is about more than just technique. Students are encouraged to explore, express themselves, and build confidence in a relaxed and encouraging environment. Opportunities to perform as part of a group or ensemble help develop teamwork and self-belief, while exam pathways are available for those who wish to work towards recognised qualifications.
Proudly small-scale and personal, Sound Start Music is built on genuine care, professionalism, and a deep passion for music education. Every student is supported in finding their own musical voice—whether they are picking up an instrument for the first time or developing their skills further.
